What is DEF Urea Pump, and How Does it Work?

A DEF urea pump is designed to transfer and dispense DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid), a non-toxic solution that reduces emissions from a diesel engine. It ensures efficient and accurate delivery of DEF to fulfil a modern diesel engine’s requirements. The demand for these pumps is continuously rising with the increasing consciousness about environmental pollution and stringent emission norms. Additionally, the growing sales of diesel-operated commercial vehicles further augment their market growth.

This article will discuss what DEF is, what a urea pump is, its types, installation and maintenance, benefits, components, implementations, etc.

What is DEF?

DEF or Diesel Exhaust Fluid is a mixture of deionised water and urea that enters the exhaust stream of diesel vehicles with SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) technology. It is a non-toxic, non-hazardous fluid since its primary chemicals are 32.5% urea and 67.5% deionised water.

Urea is the first organic compound synthesised from inorganic chemicals. Urea is already present in our bodies and serves the purpose of breaking down caustic chemicals into less harmful ones before being expelled. It performs a similar function in diesel engines.

Types of DEF Urea Pumps

Different types of urea pump diesel options cater to specific volumes and needs of DEF urea transfer. According to its flow capacity, a DEF urea pump can be of three types:

TypesDescription

1 gpm

A 1 gpm urea pump has a flow rate of 1 gallon per minute. It is most suitable for smaller equipment and vehicles.

6 gpm

The 6 gpm DEF pump has a flow rate of 6 gallons per minute. It is most suitable for medium-sized vehicles.

7 to 9 gpm

The 7 to 9 gpm DEF pump has a flow rate of 7 to 9 gallons per minute. It is specifically designed for heavy-duty applications and larger vehicles.

DEF Urea Pump Installation and Maintenance

A DEF urea pump delivers the desired results only with proper installation and maintenance. Here are a few requirements:

Installation

Follow these steps for DEF pump installation:

  • Ensure the primary tank is free of foreign matter like oil, fuel, grease, dirt, debris, dust, thread sealant, pea gravel, etc.
  • Remove any flanged connections with tank test or vent manifold connection and replace them with urea-compatible flanges and piping.
  • Since raised face flanges may damage the fibreglass flange, replace them with flat-faced flanges.
  • Check if the flat gasket is ⅛” thick with a 50-70 durometer.
  • If the pump has NPT threaded fittings, use a urea DEF-compatible thread sealant to ensure a tight connection.
  • Install the product filter between the piping or underground tank and the dispensing point.
  • Get the tank factory-cleaned with distilled or deionised water and make it ready for the final rinse with DEF urea.
  • Seal all tank fittings before shipment to avoid contamination.

Maintenance:

  • DEF is corrosive to different components in pumps and tanks, especially copper and iron. Therefore, storing the fluid in non-compatible materials requires frequent replacement and reduced effectiveness. To combat this issue, DEF requires storage and pumping with HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) or stainless steel. These materials do not react with DEF and lead to corrosion.
  • Keep a watch on your DEF pumps and watch for signs of wear and cavities over time to ensure non-contamination.
  • DEF freezes at 12oF. Therefore, avoiding contamination from external sources that may over-concentrate or dilute DEF is crucial. The fuel system should thaw the engine by passing heat through it.

Benefits of DEF Urea Pumps

A urea DEF pump uses a mixture of deionised water and urea. It sprays the mixture into the exhaust stream to convert nitrogen oxide into safer water and nitrogen. As a result, the manufacturer can build as much power as they want. Although a DEF urea pump may consume more space in your truck and add some weight, it offers several advantages in the following ways:

  • Increases fuel efficiency
  • Optimises combustion
  • Increases power
  • Reduces maintenance needs
  • Requires fewer regenerations
  • Causes less wear on the engine
  • Produces safer emissions
  • Offers more reliability

Components of DEF Urea Pump

The components of a DEF urea pump include the following:

  • Pump
  • Bleed-type master air valve (required for the pump)
  • Air supply line
  • Pump air regulator
  • Fluid supply hose
  • Suction kit
  • Wall mounting bracket
  • Fluid nozzle
  • Meter
  • Nozzle bracket and bath
  • Safety valve set to 50 psi
  • Drum bracket

Successful DEF Urea Pump Implementations

A DEF urea pump is successfully implemented into the following applications:

  • Passenger Cars: In passenger cars, a urea pump injects DEF into the vehicle’s exhaust system to minimise harmful emissions.
  • Trucks: Trucks require these pumps to follow emission standards.
  • Farm Machinery: Farm machinery uses DEF pumps to fulfil environmental regulations.
  • Airport and Dockside Vehicles: Airport and dockside vehicles utilise these pumps to reduce emissions during operations.
  • Others: Other industries also use these pumps to reduce pollutants from their diesel-powered vehicles and machines.

Global Impact of DEF Urea Pumps

Every day, millions of diesel vehicles carry goods across the world to serve people’s needs. However, the fumes they produce are a major concern, causing manufacturers to find ways to reduce pollution and improve fuel efficiency. That is why they invented SCR systems that reduce unburned fuel exhaustion by running lean. But they produce NOx that DEF reduces. Here is an understanding of the DEF urea pumps’ global impact:

  • Many trucks now feature DEF urea pumps alongside diesel pumps.
  • It causes less NOx in the atmosphere that turns into nitric acid, and destroys the ozone layer.
  • Factors like the growing implementation of SCR systems, expansion of the vehicle industry, and rising demand for DEF urea pumps in off-road and commercial vehicles contribute to their growth.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What happens if the urea pump fails?

When a urea pump fails, it causes a pressure failure, and it stops burning the urea.

2. Can I use any urea solution in my vehicle's urea pump?

A poor-quality urea solution damages the vehicle parts, including the DPF system. It may also clog the SCR catalyst and cause malfunctions. Therefore, use only verified urea solution in your vehicle’s DEF urea pump.

3. Is it possible to bypass or disable the urea injection system?

You can successfully disable the urea injection system by reprogramming the engine management system. However, some vehicles need a small electronic unit fitted into the system for the purpose.

4. Can I refill the urea tank myself, or should it be done by a professional?

You can refill the urea tank yourself by purchasing a can of DEF urea fluid from a gas station.

5. What are the consequences of driving with an empty urea tank?

As the vehicle’s engine starts emitting more NOx, it leads to several problems, such as decreased fuel efficiency, reduced engine power, and damage to the exhaust system. Therefore, always ensure driving the vehicle with sufficient urea in the tank.
